The second annual fundraising event held in Austin Texas on April 21, 2007 was a HUGE success! We had over 200 attendees at the Akins High School Auditorium. This year’s Hall of Fame Inductees were Mr. Trinh Hoi, recipient of the Lifetime Humanitarian Award and Mr. Nam Loc Nguyen, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. You may read their bios here.
Our past honorees and presenters were Ms. Khuc Minh Tho and Mr. Hubert Vo. This year’s list of entertainers consisted of Mr. Khang Nguyen, Ms. Thanh Lan, Ms. Loan Chau, and Mr. Quang Nguyen (Possible URL Links with background information on each link). We couldn’t have done it without the dedication of dozens of volunteers, sponsors, and foundation members! Our thanks go out to each person for their dedication and commitment to preserving, collecting, and promoting the Vietnamese American heritage. The fundraising event rose over $32,000 for the foundation. Come back later to see how we will allocate funds for the plight of Philippine Refugees to Canada later this year!
Overlooking the beautiful lakes of Austin sits the tranquil and elegant Oasis Restaurant. This is one of the reasons VAHF selected Oasis as a backdrop to promote the foundation’s upcoming concert event and to introduce the organization to Austin. Some of the attendees were Texas House Representative Mr. Hubert Vo, Austin Councilwoman Jennifer Kim, Austin American-Statesman journalists, Travis County Judges, professors, directors, and entertainers. The luncheon provided VAHF an opportunity to exhibit and showcase the milestones we met last year in addition to promote upcoming projects. We had over 100 attendees and raised over $8,000! Thank you to our wonderful sponsors and volunteers for believing that we could do it .
Following months of preparation, a delegation comprised of VAHF members and supporters finally completed its Operation: New Beginnings journey to Guam. The purpose of the visit was to accept a collection of documents that recorded Guam’s hosting of over 150,000 Vietnamese who had fled their homeland following the takeover of Vietnam by communist forces in 1975. Over the years, these historic documents have been stored and maintained by many entities and private individuals. The government of Guam and the US Navy and Air Force, along with a number of other organizations and individuals established aid to refugees to collect and preserve records of the events which occurred during this period. The University and Government of Guam have generously offered to donate several artifacts and documents to the VAHF Archive.
VAHF has plans to exhibit some of these items in the Houston Viet Civic Center. Please stay tune to see our extensive exhibit and materials!
In September 2005, 12 Vietnamese American organizations from Austin came together within days after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana to create the Vietnamese American Katrina Relief Effort (VAKRE). Several hundreds of Vietnamese American families were displaced by the storm and evacuated to near by states. Vietnamese civil and business leaders came together to raise over $30,000 to donate to the evacuees..
The resources below provide a Dateline Featured update about how some of the evacuees are doing a year later.
